Year 4 Stone Age Workshop

On Monday the 18th September, Year 4 took a step back into the past as both students and staff became historians. They had a wonderful time exploring both primary and secondary sources for clues that would help them to answer the many questions they had about Prehistoric Britain.

Jeremy from our local museum (The Guildhall Museum) was only too keen to take them on a trip all the way back to 900,000 BC. Students were given the opportunity to actually touch and inspect hand tools that were at least 2 million years old. They then, with the help of Jeremy, were able to create physical timelines that ranged from the old Stone Age (Palaeolithic) through to the middle Stone Age (Mesolithic) and finally the new Stone Age (Neolithic) using the various tools.

Students also examined how archaeologist used clues from the past to recreate some of the new Stone Age tools. One of the most interesting parts of the day was when they got to observe an actual woolly mammoth tooth; it was bigger than Jeremy’s head!

To culminate the day’s activities, they then took part in a Now Press Play experience where they got to relive a day in the life of a Stone Age girl. What an epic day for the young historians! Many questions were asked and conclusions drawn as the students’ imaginations were ignited and they are now ready to take on the rest of the week learning about the Stone Age!
