World Maths Day

By 25 March 2024No Comments

Today, the entire school celebrated World Maths Day by completing real-life Maths activities.

Thanks to some wonderful Lordswood families who sent in videos and short messages, every child was able to hear how different jobs used Maths: they were challenged to find one that did not.

FSU had an exceptional time exploring number sentences and shape composition. They applied their learning in a range of ways such as counting hula hoops, building a tower – seeing how to make it taller and solving self-chosen Maths problems using Numicon.

Year 1 celebrated World Maths Day by making rice crispie cakes. They thought carefully about why they needed to weigh the ingredients and how they could do this. They explored different types of scales and used digital scales for baking.

Year 2 created a pizza menu, working out the price of different fraction pizza slices. They also chose the coins they would use to pay for their slice – including buying a drink!

Year 3 consolidated their knowledge of measure through various reasoning activities.

In Year 4 they looked at how they could make money by completing household chores. They completed a thinking frame before watching the video and then added to it during the video – they were surprised by how much Maths was used in the daily life. They then worked mathematically to see how much money they’d need to save to buy a new toy or game.

Year 5 have been working with equivalent fractions. They cut cakes into a range of different equal parts and then completed questions about equivalent fractions.

In Year 6, the children completed a budgeting activity. They chose a job, calculated their monthly income (including tax and NI deductions), calculated their expenses and were left with their disposable income. They realised how the different elements of Maths that they have been taught came together in a very real-life scenario. They discussed how to save money as well as how they could make sure they had enough money for all their expenses and lifestyle.
