This Day In History

Today, across the school, we celebrated ‘This Day In History’; we explored what happened on the 26th May throughout history. We used various sources to help us understand key events as well as everyday things: the price of milk for example.

Year R looked at the differences between 2002 and today. They danced to the chart music, saw what mobile phones were like compared to now and what dial up sounded like. The children also looked into the Prime Minister then and how much food cost compared to now: knowing that the past is things that have already happened. The children also looked at the different programmes that were around for children and how the picture quality differed. After, they looked specifically at the day and realised that it was on a Sunday in 2002 and that the Chinese Mars Rover recognised the first signs of water on Mars in the soil. Finally, they discussed how much things have changed since then and they have even started to think about what life would be like in another 21 years. Their prep for learning helped them to understand the differences.

Year 1 had the most amazing time visiting Rochester Castle today on their Day in History.  They explored the castle grounds, had lots of fun playing with their friends and enjoyed the sunshine. Most of them climbed all the way to the top and persevered like a spider. They showed great perseverance and were a credit to Lordswood School.
In Year 4, they explored 26th May 1896 as their day in history. They watched the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and used a sequencing thinking frame to map out the coronation ceremony. In pairs, they researched different events and facts for this day; some used a categorising thinking frame to record the different events.
Year 5 learnt about Operation Dynamo by looking at museum resources, newspaper articles, photographs, maps, eye-witness accounts as well as online videos. They were real historians! Finally, they taught their teachers what they had found out!
Year 6 explored 26th May 1927. They looked at what was in the news, in the charts, at the movies, in fashion and prices at the shops. The children enjoyed choosing a topic and presenting their findings in a variety of ways.
